Why Heartland Community School

Not every student needs a prestigious brand. Some need a place that genuinely cares.

Warm Host Network

Heartland's host families aren't just participants — they're invested. These are families who genuinely want to share their lives with an international student and treat them as one of their own.

Support Services

Counselors, ESL support, academic tutoring, and a staff that checks in regularly. Students here don't fall through the cracks — the school actively watches for signs they need help.

Leadership Clubs

Student government, community service clubs, peer mentoring — Heartland encourages international students to lead, not just participate. That confidence carries forward.

What GLA Places Students Into

Heartland works with GLA through the ICESUSA J-1 exchange infrastructure.

J-1 Exchange Year

A full academic year as part of a DOS-regulated exchange program. Students attend Heartland as regular students and live with a screened host family in the Madison area.

Supportive Onboarding

Heartland runs an orientation program for international students covering school culture, local customs, academic expectations, and social integration. No one shows up cold.

Community Integration

Students participate in local community events, volunteer programs, and cultural exchange activities that connect them to Madison beyond the classroom.

Neurodiverse-Friendly Placement

Heartland has strong infrastructure for students who need a little more support.

Heartland Community School has experience supporting students with ADHD, mild anxiety, and learning differences. Their counseling staff is trained in cultural sensitivity and neurodivergent student needs. Combined with GLA's neurodiverse placement expertise, this makes Heartland one of our strongest recommendations for families who want both inclusion and genuine support.
