J-1 Cultural Exchange

The Real American Experience — Not the Tourist Version

The J-1 Exchange Visitor Program is one of the oldest and most trusted ways to study in the U.S. Your child lives with a volunteer American host family, attends a local public high school, and becomes part of a community. Regulated by the U.S. Department of State. Administered through designated sponsors. Typically under $15,000 for the year.

Our J-1 exchange placements are administered through ICES (International Cultural Exchange Services), a U.S. Department of State designated sponsor founded in 1989 by John Crist. ICES is reviewed annually by the Department of State and CSIET (Council on Standards for International Educational Travel). Every host family is screened, every school is vetted, and every student is supported with local coordinators, monthly check-ins, and 24/7 emergency support.

Why Families Choose J-1 Exchange

1

Affordable

Typically under $15,000 for an academic year. Host families are volunteers — no homestay fees. That's a fraction of what boarding school or private day school costs on an F-1 visa.

2

Authentic Immersion

Your child becomes part of an American family — not a paying guest. They eat dinner together, celebrate holidays, and build real relationships. This is cultural exchange at its best.

3

Federally Regulated

The J-1 program is overseen by the U.S. Department of State with annual reviews by CSIET. Designated sponsors must meet strict standards for student safety, host family vetting, and program accountability. This isn't the Wild West — it's one of the most regulated programs in international education.

4

Gateway to More

Many students use J-1 as a first step. If they love it, they can transition to an F-1 visa for a longer program at a school of their choice. J-1 gives you a low-risk way to test the waters before committing to a multi-year plan.

How the J-1 Exchange Process Works

1. Application & Profile

Your child completes an application through our designated sponsor partner (ICES). This includes academic records, English proficiency, medical history, and a personal essay about why they want to experience American culture.

2. Host Family Matching

ICES local coordinators recruit and screen volunteer host families in communities across the U.S. Families go through background checks, home inspections, and interviews. Your child's profile is shared with interested families until a genuine match is found.

3. School Placement

Once a host family is confirmed, the local coordinator enrolls your child at the nearest public high school. The school receives your student's academic records and works with the coordinator to ensure a smooth start.

4. DS-2019 & SEVIS

ICES issues the DS-2019 form — the foundation of the J-1 visa application. We guide you through the SEVIS fee (I-901), visa interview prep, and all the paperwork so nothing gets missed.

5. Arrival & Orientation

Your child arrives in the U.S., meets their host family, and attends a local orientation. The ICES coordinator introduces them to their school, community, and daily routine.

6. Ongoing Support

Monthly check-ins with the local coordinator, 24/7 emergency support, regular reports to parents. If issues come up — academic, social, or personal — there's always someone on the ground who knows your child's situation.
